The Motivating Undergraduates in Science & Technology (MUST) Scholarship Program (link) application is now available online. Approximately 100 undergraduate students in engineering, science and technology fields will be awarded scholarships covering half of tuition up to $10,000. MUST scholarship recipients will also receive a $5,000 stipend for a summer internship at a NASA facility.

The program is administered by a collaboration between the Hispanic College Fund (HCF), Society of Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) and the United Negro College Fund Special Programs (UNCFSP).

The final deadline is August 19, 2006 – the MUST application is entirely on-line. You will be required to submit an essay, a letter of recommendation, and resume on-line plus you will have to mail a transcript and proof of citizenship to HCF offices, so finish your application early! FYI: Program Eligibility Requirements:
  • Must be U.S. citizen
  • Must be studying at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico for the 2006-2007 academic year
  • Be a rising freshman, sophomore, junior or transfer student attending or enrolling in an accredited U.S. higher education institution as a full-time student
  • Must have earned and maintain a cumulative Grade Point Average of no less than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Must be pursuing a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics

2005.November
Mrs. Sangeeta Gad, CCSDS Coordinator for Recruitment and Retention, accompanied some Houston ISD teachers and professors as part of an education team exploring methods of incorporating computing as part of curriculum. Daniel Valadez, a student at UHD got the opportunity to attend this high-power networking conference.

2005.October 22-29
Dr. Richard Aló, CCSDS Director, accompanied 10 students to SACNAS. Students attended were Mohammad Abedi, Karla Alvarez, Jose Barajas, Emily DeLaGarza, Jose Jaimes, Vien Lam, Claudia Mendez, Moses Osoro, Juan Razo, and Patricia Ramon in Denver, CO.  Six of these students presented scientific research posters at the conference; Emily DeLaGarza won a poster presentation award for her research. SACNAS provides unparalleled conference activities for students, educators, administrators and researchers in science. This year’s conference theme, Science for America’s Future, explores the contemporary status and role of Chicano/Latinos and Native Americans in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and advances new agendas for greater diversity in America’s scientific fields.

2005.October 19-22
Dr. Richard Aló, CCSDS Director, accompanied 4 students to Richard Tapia. As invited scholarship recipients, students who attended this trip were William Holtkemp, Moses Hernandez, Ruby Mendez, and Aaron Murray.

2005.October 06-08
Jose Barajas, Dulce Carbajal, Moses Hernandez, William Holtkemp, Aaron Murray, Khoa Phan, Endang Suhendar, Chad Kocurek, Adnane Kidari and Hassan Muhammad attended this year's HENAAC Conference. Four of these students attended the College Bowl at the conference; Hassan Muhammad’s Team won 2nd place.

2004.December
In December 2004, the College of Sciences and Technology’s Scholars Academy was awarded the Texas Higher Education Star Award, established by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to recognize exemplary contributions toward closing the educational gaps that challenge the state. The Scholars Academy has received acknowledgement on national and international levels as an exemplar for fostering academic success within an urban university environment.
