University of Houston
U of H is a comprehensive research university closely linked to the Houston metropolitan area. The largest Ph.D. granting and research university in Houston, and the only doctoral degree-granting institution in the UH System, the UH has a diverse student population exceeding 31,000, including some 6,500 graduate and professional students, and with over 900 ranked faculty members. It houses 23 centers and institutes that conduct research in science, mathematics, engineering and technology fields. Classified as "Research University II" by the Carnegie Foundation, it has annual sponsored research expenditures in excess of $40 million.
University of Houston - Downtown
UHD offers 25 degree programs. An open-admission undergraduate urban university, UHD provides opportunities for first generation college students and non-traditional students seeking career and educational advancement. UHD has developed partnerships with the HISD, Tenneco, and the Houston Endowment that focus on keeping at-risk students in school and preparing them for college. Approximately 85% of UHD students are first-generation college students.
University of Houston - Victoria
UHV is an upper-level and graduate institution with selected bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, and education. Of particular interest to the AMP, it offers bachelor’s degrees in Applied Arts and Sciences, Computer Science, and Mathematical Sciences, and a master’s degree in Secondary Math Education. A young school, having attained status as a degree-granting university in 1983, UHV has seen its minority graduation rate increase from 33% in 1993 to 86% in 1997. Still growing, UHV has significant potential to contribute to the AMP goals, since it is situated in a location where 45% of the population is either Hispanic or African American.
Texas Southern University
TSU is a comprehensive, state-supported, Historically Black University founded in 1927 and established as a state-supported university in 1947. The University’s mission supports teaching, research, and public service. Its eight colleges and schools currently enroll approximately 7,000 students. TSU has a strong record of success in implementing grants and contracts awarded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and other major agencies and private foundations. A significant amount of research in science, mathematics and education is currently underway.
Rice University
Rice is a small, private university, with approximately 2,700 undergraduates and 1,400 graduate students. Rice consistently ranks among the top 15 or so research universities, as reported in annual rankings in national magazines and has been rated among the top three "Best Buys" for higher education each year since 1992. Twenty-eight seniors, the highest proportion of any university in the nation, won highly coveted NSF Fellowships for graduate study in science and engineering in 1998, and 20 Rice faculty are members of the National Academy of Sciences and/or the National Academy of Engineering.
Texas State University
Texas State University-San Marcos is a doctoral granting university located in the burgeoning Austin-San Antonio corridor, the largest campus in the Texas State University System, and the 6th largest in the state. Texas State's 27,171 students choose from 115 undergraduate and 84 masters and 6 Ph.D. graduate degree programs offered by seven colleges (Applied Arts, Business Administration, Education, Fine Arts and Communication, Health Professions, Liberal Arts, and Science), the University College, and the Graduate College.
Houston Community College System
HCCS enrolls almost 34,000 credit students at its five colleges. The largest community college in the Houston area and the third largest community college in the state, HCCS enrolls almost 45% of the area’s 2-year college population.
San Jacinto College District
SJC is a community college comprised of three campuses in Houston: the Central, North, and South Campuses. San Jacinto College District has a total student body of approximately 17,500, of which 9,300 attend the Central campus. In the fall of 1997, 8.9% of the San Jacinto College District student body was African American, 20.9% Hispanic, and 0.6% Native American. In the interval between 1990 and 1996, the Hispanic population in the College’s service area increased by 43.1 percent.
Houston Independent School District
The HISD served 209,325 students in the 1996-97 academic year, 49,455 of whom were in grades 9-12. Of the total enrollment, 34.4% were African American and 52% Hispanic. The HISD has agreed to endorse and promote Houston AMP efforts to inform high school students of opportunities for university study in SMET fields and recruit eligible students to participating Alliance schools.
National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is an independent federal agency created by Congress in 1950 "to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; to secure the national defense…" With an annual budget of about $5.5 billion, we are the funding source for approximately 20 percent of all federally supported basic research conducted by America’s colleges and universities. In many fields such as mathematics, computer science and the social sciences, NSF is the major source of federal backing.
