The Houston LSAMP is rich in opportunities for research experience. Many of the NSF-supported centers and institutes within AMP institutions have committed to providing LSAMP students the opportunity to participate in research activities. The LSAMP-based centers of excellence include areas of research in computer and computational science, geoscience and geophysics, nanotechnology, aeronautics, material science, energy and genetics. Each institution will identify NSF-sponsored research programs and place students with the researchers. These individuals and organizations will make it possible for LSAMP students to work on special projects, reinforcing academic skills acquired in the classroom, and preparing them for graduate education. Research faculty will meet weekly with LSAMP students to review their research activities.

The LSAMP research experience will also include preparing and delivering research presentations during an annual Houston LSAMP Research Day, and publication of research findings in the annual Research Day Proceedings as well as in the LSAMP newsletter. Dr. Arthur Vailas, Vice Chancellor for Research and Intellectual Properties Management for the UH System, is committed to developing research opportunities for LSAMP students in the UH System and in conjunction with research officers of the other LSAMP universities.
