Since, in Texas, race or ethnicity cannot be considered as a factor in either admissions or scholarship awards, anyone is eligible to apply.

Recruitment
The Houston LSAMP’s recruitment approach will include the following:

  • Recruiting from eight high schools with high (73-98%) minority enrollments (UH-V and SWTU will identify high schools that meet similar criteria in their geographic locations);
  • Forming reference networks consisting of teachers and existing high school organizations;
  • Using university role models to inspire students to enroll in SMET programs; and
  • Educating parents and guardians about careers in SMET fields.

The LSAMP universities and community colleges propose to develop an ongoing relationship with the eight high minority high schools, allowing us to initiate a mentoring process designed to stimulate interest in SMET fields. Practically all of the Houston LSAMP universities and community colleges have programs targeted to increasing opportunities for high school students, and these programs will direct significant resources toward the eight high schools. The HISD proposes to host four LSAMP Information Days each year at the target high schools, one for all students in each of grades 9-12. The program will include introductions in support of the LSAMP from their principals and science and math teachers, and presentations and small group sessions with LSAMP representatives and LSAMP Scholars. Additionally, we will take advantage of high school College Nights and seek invitations to parent organization meetings to introduce and explain the Houston LSAMP program and benefits to high school students and their parents.

The community colleges will also recruit from high schools with predominantly minority student populations. Students will be eligible for LSAMP Scholar status at entry to a community college, or upon transfer to a participating university using the selection criteria described below. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has approved an articulation agreement and core curriculum to facilitate transfer of credit among Texas institutions of higher education. This will allow for seamless transfer of Houston LSAMP students from community colleges to universities, if students meet the universities’ eligibility requirements. Houston LSAMP universities will participate in Career Days at participating community colleges to promote interest in the LSAMP and SMET graduate education.

Selection
Each LSAMP institution will have a selection committee that will review the student applications and select students into the program.
