The Houston-Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation is about the students first and foremost. Just to remind everyone of that fact, we have named our capital campaign “Scholars First”.

Scholars’ Stipends
The students’ educational needs and aspirations are at the forefront of everything we do in this alliance. We believe in our power to transform the lives of students, and that they in turn will transform our community and some day be the leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Scholars are what we call students who receive a stipend from our program. A gift that helps our students helps our community. Each student who receives a stipend gives back to the community by contributing time and effort to community events such as Habitat for Humanity, helping at homeless shelters, peer mentoring, K-12 school visits, science demonstrations and tutoring just to name a few.  Depending on need, and the level of commitment they have for our community, students receive stipends to help off set the cost of education.

Scholars’ Events
Each year the H-LSAMP partners hosts a national conference to showcase the outstanding work, dedication and effort from our scholars. Students present their original research to their peers, attend workshops to prepare themselves for graduate school, and network with corporations from around the world. This experience is pivotal to gaining confidence in real world settings. The best conferences involve diverse student bodies from across the map, coupled with seminars from the nations top scientists. Contributions to our events fund helps to continue this exciting event.

Scholars’ Research

Experience has shown that students who are involved in research retain more information about the subject area they are studding, graduate faster with higher scores, and are more likely to continue to a graduate program.  The H-LSAMP partners are involved in yearlong research for enrolled students and a number of  summer research programs for students who have other commitments. Students who do research are then funded to travel to national conference and speak at our national conference to showcase their work.
